At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the keepers aid their gators by teaching them a “station” or “come to place” cue with positive reinforcement. From a physical health standpoint, this gives the keepers the opportunity to visually examine the well-being of willing reptilian partners. From a behavioral health standpoint, this gives the animals the opportunity to use their behavior to control a valued resource, in this instance food. Empowered animals, those who control valued resources with their behavior, tend to be bolder, more exploratory, and calmer even in stressful situations.
